University Honors Program Contracts

Artz Youth Magazine

This is my final contract project called Artz. This is a creative-arts themed magazine targeted at youth ages 6-17 years. I worked alongside my Typography II (ART 430) professor, Zach Clark, to make this project a reality.

This project was inspired by my love of reading magazines during my adolescent years, as well as a booklet project I did in Professor Zach’s class.

Each page provides different articles and activities for kids and teens that would inspire their creative journey. Some are articles about why they should pursue art and some art lessons I learned during my years at university, simplified to fit the target audience. Each page also provides some coloring pages and other interactive activities like word searches and writing prompts to provide a much more immersive experience to “draw” in youth further.

This project was inspired by my love of reading teen magazines during my adolescent years, as well as a booklet project I did in Professor Zach’s class. This magazine practices what I learned about typography from layout to font choices, as well as setting up documents in reader and printer spreads for different results. This project also acquainted me more with the functions of different Adobe Cloud applications, especially InDesign which played the largest role in the project’s completion.

Additionally, I also was aided by my friends (see Table of Contents page for names) to provide kids with examples of unique art styles and how each artwork represents a different story for each of my artistic buddies.

As previously mentioned, the Magazine also serves as an interactive activity book. It is filled with black-and-white illustrations by me that readers can color, create their own Museum Label Page (inspired by my Art History professor, Vrushali Anil Dhage) and the Cheerful Collage Chapter provides them with fun drawing and writing games. This helps engage the young audience and  further emphasize how this project is to encourage youth to enjoy creating art.

    Printed Version

Much like Una, I printed Artz into a real magazine. I collaborated with my  local print store in my hometown, and I conversed with them how I should send my file. I used this booklet style printing Professor Zach (my mentor for the project) taught me, for proper print formatting. I also requested how I wanted the cover pages to be glossy paper, and for the inner pages to be light matte paper, based on some magazines I already own and some of the papers that I worked with at school.

      Google Form

Art Through the Eyes of a Kid - Google Form

Much like my Honors Program Promotion (link it), I also made a Google Form to help me with the “Why Take Art” article. I asked my classmates if they had kids or younger siblings between the ages of 6-17, and how art has benefitted their lives or not.

Shout out to my friend Goose (they made the “Ruffus” picture on the Artz Gallery page), who brought the printed versions to their local school where they volunteer. These kids gave me a large range of opinions that really wove my article together!

The results were mostly youth having a positive perspective on art, with the only setback being despite this enthusiasm, they were not sure if they would pursue it as a career. Even if these kids are not creatively enthused, it is those opinions that are going to motivate me to write an article in an attempt to help them change their minds.

      Concept of Time

Here are my concept mockups for my magazine. These included some layout sketches of how I would arrange pages, along with a last slide with the Adobe Colors and Fonts I utilized for the project.

There was so much content I wanted to teach kids of the world of art, however, one of my major takeaways also from this project was Time-Management. Because I had so many other school-art projects I needed to complete, I had to to get creative with the use of time by cherry-picking the most significant pages, like the "Art Museum Activity" and "Why Take Art" article, and eliminating those that do not seem necessary to teach youth at the moment, like my Adobe AppGuide since most kids do not have access to these apps.

      Conclusion

With Time-Management in mind, if I were to schedule a project with you, I am capable of organizing a few days to plan only essential elements for planning small concepts, but I am ready to decide more time for your company story head on once your vision is realized!
